Review of Bryson City, North Carolina

Beautiful place
Star Rating - 10/5/2009
Bryson Citys landscape is beautiful. Lush green with streams and a few waterfalls thrown in. Temperature is mild with summers in the upper 80s and low 90s but humidity is a bit high as this area as it is a temperate rain forest. The people are close knit group who have not gotten over the civil war,so "outsiders" are not welcomed with open arms. Also in the not very long past the people lived in "HOLLERS", and did not venture out very frequently. There fore many are closely related. If you have seen or can remember the movie, Deliverence, this movie is more of a docuementary than fictional. As a matter of fact it was shot in nearby areas, and much is the same today. Culturally the area is a dead zone.

I grew up in Bryson City as did my ancestors, who were the Bryson family. Other than our small nuclear family, we had no other relatives in town. As a matter of fact my grandmother was from New York City and I had many relatives there. This was rather typical of most families in Bryson City. Many people left to work elsewhere and many others moved in from other areas. Since Bryson City is home to much of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including its highest peak, Clingmans Dome, it welcomes many tourists from all over the world . It has the Nantahala River, one of the nation's most popular whitewater venues, and beautiful Fontana Lake with the highest dam east of the Rockies and many million dollar homes around it. For generations, people have moved here from many areas because of the beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. Our school had many new people every year from as far away as California. All were welcomed. Our schools are very good with a low dropout rate and a high percentage of people going on to college. California schools, where I live now, have a dropout rate that is 3 times higher. By the way, Deliverance was shot no where near. It was shot in Georgia and South Carolina. Bryson City and Franklin, where I see you came from, are culturally the same and geographically very close, only 27 miles apart. I suspect your childish and incorrect view is the result of personal issues.

It's spelled "hollar" and as in any small community, people are likely related to one another and closeknit. The Civil War has nothing to do with this cultural norm. Your inference that incest takes place due to the size and location and the reference to "Deliverance" is deeply offensive to any small town in the mountains or anywhere else. You will not find a cultural mecca in any small town, but you probably knew that prior to relocating to the NC mountains and perhaps should have better evaluated your priorities instead of badmouthing the areas of your selection.
